The heart of a teacher
I once heard a personal finance expert say a great financial advisor has the heart of a teacher rather than the heart of a salesman. That stuck with me, because I approach marketing and working with my clients the same way. As a marketer, I teach you how to identify and find your ideal customers, educate them about you and your business, and make it as easy as possible for them to buy from you. When those pieces fall into place, leads and sales follow.
Good marketing is about teaching and storytelling
After college I helped state legislators tell the story of their fight against the forces of darkness (always the other party, of course) through press releases, speeches, and newsletters. After politics began to lose its charms I worked for small start-up companies during the dotcom boom, where I helped shape the story behind our software for investors, employees and customers.
Later I worked for two Fortune 500 corporations as direct marketing was transitioning from print to online marketing. This was a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of communicating with customers on the internet. I also decided to learn more about the technical side of business, so I earned an MBA along the way.
From cubicle dweller to entrepreneur
Working in big, successful companies helped me learn a lot about systems and processes and how to tell which marketing programs work and which are a waste of money. The downside – I was really far away from actual customers, and sometimes it was hard to tell if I was making anyone’s day better.
That’s why I decided to start my own business. I struck out on my own as a marketing consultant in 2010 and I’ve loved every minute of it.
Now I get to help other entrepreneurs tell the story of their brand through their website, email and social media!
